Netflix has achieved many successes throughout its tenure, but there is one that stands out:
Strange things. Matt and Ross Duffer's sci-fi movie has spread across pop culture like a freight train, inspiring everything from haunted houses to crossovers with Mutant Ninja Turtles Teens. (This is not a joke. This is an actual comic book currently being published.) Part of this is how Stranger Things influenced its cover art; everything from Dungeons & Dragons to '80s horror movies is woven into the series' DNA. But the biggest influence has to be Steven Spielberg. It is Spielberg's filmography that has helped shape the DNA of Stranger Things, whether they are films he has directed or produced; The young cast of characters pay homage to The Goonies, while the supernatural events are a spiritual successor to Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

The Duffer Brothers chose one particular Spielberg film that had a big influence on Stranger Things, which is Super 8. The Duffers talked about the influence of Super 8 in their creative process when they were guests at the cinema. Happy, sad, confused podcast:
"We wanted to bring back the heartfelt, non-ironic family adventure storytelling that seemed to be disappearing — except for 'Super 8,' no one was doing that. And 'Super 8' is a series one-off movie. I loved "Super 8," but then it disappeared. No one else has done that. And I think there's an appetite - or that's what I hope - for that type of storytelling, so that more than anything, it's, it's trying to stay in the zone.
