Since its debut in 1977, Star Wars has been one of the biggest and most beloved movie franchises. George Lucas' impressive universe has continued to grow over the decades to include television series, animated films, video games, comic books and, of course, 11 live-action feature films.
With a story spanning six decades of filmmaking ranging from the classic original trilogy to spin-offs of the Skywalker saga, the Star Wars films have always inspired passion in fans. However, not every feature film in the franchise turns out to be a gem, and there are some Star Wars movies that people can't wait to see again, and some that leave audiences thinking that once was enough.
'Star Wars:The Rise of Skywalker' (2019)
The sequel trilogy had a disappointing ending, Star War:
The Rise of Skywalker struggles to find its own path while resisting ideas introduced in Star Wars:
The Last Jedi. If the film has some very good elements – great visual effects and performances from the lead duo that are truly captivating – it is sadly marred by many flaws.
Emperor Palpatine's (Ian McDiarmid) return was a shocking mistake, Ben Solo's (Adam Driver) redemption arc was fruitless, and the "Rey Skywalker" moment really didn't make any sense. The Rise of Skywalker is all the more frustrating on rewatch because the trilogy's potential may have been so obvious, but it clashed so violently with what Disney actually produced.
'Star Wars:Episode I - The Phantom Menace' (1999)
One of the most anticipated movies of all time, Star Wars:
Episode I – The Phantom Menace hit theaters in 1999 as the first Star Wars film in 16 years. Given the delightful simplicity of the original films, it's surprising to see George Lucas invest in Jedi politics for the prequels, with The Phantom Menace focusing on the trade blockade on Naboo. This leaves the film overloaded with exposition as it struggles to stage the epic tragedy of fallen ideals that will define the trilogy. While its flaws are obvious, it should be noted that its highlights are truly spectacular, with Ewen McGregor and Liam Neeson both excellent as Jedi Masters while their final showdown with Darth Maul (Ray Park) is an extraordinary sight.
